Wrapping Up ACI’s 70th Anniversary

As 2025 nears to a close, and the 70th anniversary of ACI winds down, it’s remarkable to look back not only at the early caravans and explosive mid-century growth, but also at how the Club navigated its modern era. The last four decades have brought major challenges, bold innovations, and a steady evolution in how Airstreamers connect, camp, and caravan.

Here’s a milestone-driven look at the years from 1980 through today — and the turning points that shaped the Club we know now.

1980s: Independence, Transition, and New Horizons

1980 marked a dramatic turning point: Airstream Club International (then WBCCI) became fully independent from the Airstream company—administratively, financially, and operationally. The Club relocated from the Airstream factory in California to Jackson Center, Ohio, settling into a small duplex in town before moving to a larger rented office later that same year.

Key Milestones

  • Full independence from Airstream (1979–1980).
The Club took full responsibility for staffing, finances, and operations for the first time.
  • Membership challenges began.
With Airstream sales down and dues rising, membership fell sharply—almost 20% in just two years, with gradual declines continuing through the 1990s.
  • New headquarters built.
Years of planning paid off when WBCCI dedicated its new permanent HQ at 803 E. Pike St. in April 1985.
  • First Lifetime Memberships (1989).
The IBT approved a lifetime dues program, still available today.
  • Growth in Intra-Clubs.
New groups emerged to support young people (Teenstreamers), computer users, full-timers, and hobbyists.

Despite the membership dips, the Club expanded its infrastructure, modernized its caravan programs, and began developing its digital future.

1990s: Expanding Caravans & Strengthening Club Identity

The 1990s continued to be a period of declining membership, but they were equally marked by creativity, diversification, and administrative modernization.

Key Milestones

  • Broader acceptance of Airstream products.
Throughout the decade, the Club steadily opened membership to newer and nontraditional Airstream-built models—culminating in 1995, when all Airstream travel trailers, motorhomes, and fifth wheels became eligible.
  • “Members at Large” introduced (1995).
For the first time, Airstreamers could remain part of WBCCI without belonging to a local unit—critical for retaining members when Units disbanded or members moved.
  • Growth in Caravans.
    • National Caravans became fully independent of the International Rally (1994), allowing more diverse routes and schedules.
    • Unit caravans gained a formal numbering system (1989), increasing consistency.
    • This became one of the strongest eras for Region, National, and Overseas Caravans offered by the Club.
  • Leadership and staff transitions.
Dave Reed—first paid Executive Secretary—was hired in 1985 and later became Executive Director; Cindy Reed succeeded him in 1999 as Director of Administration.
  • First Club website launched (1997).
A foundational step into the digital era.

By the end of the 1990s, WBCCI had expanded its caravan offerings, modernized its office and leadership structures, and taken its first steps online.

2000s: Digital Transformation and New Approaches

The early 2000s brought both turbulence and reinvention, as the Club grappled with cultural shifts, brand identity, and the rapid rise of the internet.

Key Milestones

  • Continuing membership declines—but a turning point ahead.
Dues increases and debates over potential constitutional changes created friction.
Some proposals—like renaming the Club or allowing certain non-Airstream motorhomes—were rejected after lively public debate.
  • Expansion of digital communication.
    • New websites were launched for Regions, Units, and Intra-Clubs.
    • The Club experimented with an online forum.
    • The official WBCCI Facebook group launched in 2008, becoming a major communication channel.
  • PDF Blue Berets (2009).
Members could now read the Blue Beret magazine online.
  • Membership Directory modernization (2011).
The directory moved to an 8.5” x 11” format and began incorporating email addresses—an early shift toward digital-first member resources.

The decade ended with the Club searching for ways to reconnect with members—and the seeds of its next era of growth just beginning to take root.

2010s: Rebirth, Rebranding, and Digital Maturity

Beginning in 2013, Airstream Club International experienced something remarkable: membership growth for the first time in decades. That growth has continued every year since.

Key Milestones

  • Membership steadily increases (2013–present).
After bottoming out, the Club’s appeal to a new generation of travelers reversed long-term declines.
  • Rebranding to match the times.
    • 2016: “Wally Byam Airstream Club” adopted as a dba name.
    • 2019: “Airstream Club International” becomes the primary public-facing name.
  • Local Club modernizations.
Many Units updated their names beginning in 2014, signaling a more welcoming, contemporary identity.
  • Growth of Overseas presence.
Short-lived Australia Unit (2013) and the Europe Unit (2016–2023) expanded the Club’s global footprint.
  • New Intra-Clubs.
The 2010s and early 2020s saw an explosion of interest-based groups—Grapes & Grains, Boondockers, Indie Streamers, Stella’s Sisters, Pride Streamers, and many more.
  • Digital communications flourish.
    • The WBCCI website was fully rebuilt into today’s ACI site (2019).
    • Email blasts and social media became core communication channels.
    • A “flipping book” online Blue Beret format debuted in 2023.
    • The Blue Beret Bulletin launched in 2023 for off-month updates.

As caravanning and camping surged in popularity, ACI’s digital transformation ensured the Club stayed relevant and connected.

An Open House and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place in May 2025 for the opening of the new ACI Headquarters at 707 East Pike Street in Jackson Center.

2020s: Modern Governance, New Headquarters, and a Stronger Community

The last several years have brought some of the most significant structural and strategic updates in the history of Airstream Club International.

Key Milestones

  • IBT moves to quarterly virtual meetings.
More efficient, more modern, and more frequent governance.
  • New headquarters purchased (2023) and opened (2024).
ACI relocated from its longtime 803 E. Pike St. office into the newly renovated 707 E. Pike St. building.
Plans are underway to convert the old building into a Member Clubhouse and Historical Center.
  • International Rally resurgence.
After years of lower attendance, rallies have now exceeded 1,000 Airstreams for two years in a row.
  • Caravan demand hits all-time highs.
With more than two dozen National Caravans offered annually—many with long waiting lists—the Club is experiencing a renaissance in organized travel.
  • Digitization of Club archives (2024–present).
A major effort to preserve, protect, and share Club history with members.
  • Continued membership growth.
Even with dues increases, the Club now exceeds 10,000 member families, a level unseen in decades.

A Club Built for the Next Generation of Airstreamers

From independence in the 1980s to digital transformation in the 2000s and a full membership resurgence in the 2010s and 2020s, Airstream Club International has continually adapted—always guided by the spirit of Wally Byam and the community he inspired.

Today’s Club blends tradition with innovation:
Heritage numbers and historic caravans live alongside social media groups, online rally registrations, and modern governance. What hasn’t changed is the core purpose: fun, friendship, adventure, and the Airstream way of life.

As the Club looks ahead to its next 70 years, it continues to build on a legacy of connection — on the road, at rallies, and across the Airstream community worldwide.
